Apple’s Rosetta Stone helps translate apps from PowerPC to Intel

Most of you probably don’t know why I added the word Stone after Apple’s new technology “Rosetta” in my headline.
The reason has to be digged up to 1823 in Egypt, in the city of Rosetta (actually named Rashid), when Pierre-François Bouchard (1772-1832) discovered this stone.
It solved a very hard linguistic problem:
the translation of hieroglyphs.

click for a bigger picture (pop-up)

Not that a full translation to english was carved into the stone, but it contained the same ancient text in 3 main idioms:
Egyptian demotic
Egyptian hieroglyphs
Greek

Being greek a well known language, it helped decipher the cryptic hieroglyphs.
Therefore it’s a key discovering for humanity, history, archeology and so on.

Please, read the wikipedia entry for rosetta stone to read more about its story.

Now…
We know that Rosetta stands for translation, so this “new” (it’s everything but new) technology helps translating code from one processor architecture to another.
Well…
It’s more of a translation-emulation process.
It happened already a few years ago (it was about 1997) when Digital Computing
(acquired by Compaq > acquired by HP > we could go on…), launched the first attempt to have an Alpha® processor running Windows NT 4.
Guys, I can assure at the time it was the ShiT!, because we were doing 3d animation on SoftImage® and we were sick of slow Pentiums compared to Alpha, Sparc and others.

Well… Digital introduced this technology called FX!32, and if you google it, you’ll find plenty of pages, that’s why I won’t try to explain more than I know about this technology.

Here is an interesting article about FX!32 by Mark Joseph Edwards

and this paper byt Anton Chernoff, Ray Hookway of Digital Equipment Corporation which I found on UseNIX

if you want to dig more into it.

Fruity dual-core chips: Apple+Intel smoothie

well…
time has come for us to fear!

some people might feel good about this (and for some aspects I’m cheered as well),
but I think this should be a matter of argument.

I’m gonna explain myself better:
we could (actually will) be getting faster mac machines (did I say this???).
intel x86 processors will be the core of the next generation macs (I’m not talking about the next speed bump of 80MHz).
applications such as Macromedia Flash would highly benefit from this change, but will the final user (like me)?
I mean…
I switched to mac after 11 years of pc use, and It took me a while to get used to it.
but now I’m loving it.
I love that there’s a simple, almost hassle-free interface, but that’s not all.
I have a solid processor, and the assurance that almost nobody programs viruses/adware/spyware that runs on this processor.
Aren’t you scared about this new virii creators wave that might invade our little niche world?
Cause let’s be honest: we’re niche, and we love it.

I really hope this switch won’t open the doors to malicious (m****r f*****s) coders.
Well… at least we won’t be running windows.
