Scoop: Dinamically remove non dynamic movie clips

WOWOWO!
this is a shocking new (and an interesting one).
we were wondering for years how to F-ing remove stuff from the stage, that wasn’t dinamically placed there by US.
I was having a late night chat with Dem, and we were discussing some of Flash oddities.

he suddenly comes out with this:

d: – “do you know you can remove content from the stage that wasn’t put there dinamically?”
u: – “What the fuck are you talking about” (sorry for not censoring this… I’m just reporting)
d: – “yeah… I bumped into it once, by chance. You just have to swapDepth the movieclip and then call a removeMovieClip() method on it”.

I couldn’t believe this…
It might have been a great topic for my past project CodeTroubles…

I immediately opened flash and made a quick test

var cl:MovieClip=this.clp;
trace(cl);
cl.swapDepths(0);
cl.removeMovieClip();

IT WORKS!!!

ok… try it and find a way to use it (If you’re still one of those who place stuff on stage. I try not to)
thanks to Dem for the good (funny) one.

Processing+PostScript+Graffiti Artist = printable pdf posters

It’s already a couple days ago I was meant to post this, but I’ve been pretty busy on our new project,
so the funny things come later…

As you might have seen in my previous post, I finally started playing with Processing.
What I was interested in since the beginning was the opportunity to start creating some generative art and export it as a printable format.
I’m pretty fed up with the web lately, and think that “tangible is better”.

by the way…
I made this little applet to generate circles and export the result to a PostScript file.
What I used to make it?

Processing
SimplePostScript library for Processing, by Marius Watz.

I showed it to Boghe and he sent me these after half an hour.
Thought it was worth publishing as a collaboration between TwoDotOne and The Boghe.
Made them as PDF posters.
download them if you like, and give Boghe (and me) a thank.

Processing: first attempts

ok.
today I had spare half an hour, and instead of resting I decided to finally start using Processing.

as a beginner I just started playing with basic commands and so…
but I like what simplicity can generate.

inside Ars Electronica – 08 :: outside Ars Electronica

I’m sitting on a bench in munich’s station, with no wireless connection but my UMTS connection works great.
Have to post what I wrote today on the train.
here it is to you all:

OK.
Ars Electronica 2005 is over (for me at least).
I want to use this post just to thank everyone was with me during these days.
First of all thanx to Christian Giordano (UK), who kept me up and running with his complaints about everything, from the (un)necessary task of building Milk to the greatness of Ben Fry and Casey Reas.
Thanx then to Paolo Tonon from TempoPresente (IT) and his sweet girlfriend Federica for being of such good company when “the complainer” left on sunday.
Thanx to the unexpected meeting Silvio and Paolo from limiteazero (IT).
I had a great time with everybody at AE.
Thanx to Regine from “we-make-money-not-art” for introducing me to Ben and for the tips about stuff.
Regine, keep on posting stuff before I do, please.

Thanx to Ben Fry and Casey Reas for answering my questions.
Thanx to Theo Jansen for being such a source for inspiration.
Thanx to everybody exhibiting at AE2k5 and gave me such a great time.

This was due, and it’s from my heart.

Hope to see you all next year, and hopefully see you more often.

Besides being the city where Ars Electronica happens, Linz is a city like many, including its strett art scene.
As almost everywhere around the world, on the streets you can see graffiti, tags, stickers, stencils.

inside Ars Electronica – 05 :: CyberArts 2005 DVD

coming out of the Net Vision conference of this morning, happened in the BrucknerHaus, I decided to stop by the small counter where they sell books and DVD’s from this year and the past ones.
Decided to buy the CyberArts DVD which contains documented videos of the whole Festival, and all the computer animation that was shown during the Prix Ars Electronica 2005.

The DVD contains amazing stuff.
I’m just at page 2 of the animation, and I liked almost all of them.
especially
Fallen Art [Tomek Baginski / Platige Image (PL)],
9 (beeeeeautiful) [Shane Acker (US)],
Man OS 1-extraordinateur (which I couldn’t find any link to. Please provide one if you know where to find it.).

inside Ars Electronica – 04 :: Processing

it’s been interesting to see that these 2 guys (and the moltitude of forum users and people contributing to the project) have won a prize at Ars Electronica.

processing.jpg

The guys were quickly presenting the project (althoug not being understood immediately by part of the audience).
They gave us insights and anticipations about what’s Processing gonna be soon.
The project is still young, but very cool.
They quickly mentioned Wiring and the Developer part of the project, plus they introduced us to a new subdomain of processing.org

mobile.processing.org

doesn’t it sound cool?
I went to ask couple questions to Ben Fry and he was really polite, also telling me that my question in the forum was a good one (glad).
I asked him how come the support for offscreen buffer was so buggy and he tenderly replied
“I wasn’t expecting the tecnique to be that used by people”.
They’re implementing this tecnique and tools to implementing it on PGraphics3, which will be tomorrow’s PImage object.

It was cool meeting him. I didn’t talk to Casey Reas because he was busy talking to other people, and I hate bugging people which primary interest is not answering my questions.

WOW!
I witnessed it!

a while ago lot of us might have read about this M.I.T. experiment that puts a cockroach on a robot and has the little (not that little) animal drive around.
well…
besides the cockroach being about the size of my hand, the machine is impressive.
i saw the huge insect direct towards me and it’s scary.

Leaving for Linz at 5.00 PM

I’m going to Austria, and I’m very excited about this.
It took me hours to collect all the stuff (mainly cables, adaptors, patches, cameras, memory sticks blablah, bla, BLA).

As my friends might tell you, I’m THE un-traveller.
I hate travelling and moving and stuff like that, so there’s a layer of mistery on my trip to see the

Ars Electronica Festival in Linz.

I’m gonna be there a few days (only 3 planned, but they could extend up to 7/8).
I’m meeting christian (finally) and a bunch of other people, including regine from we-make-money-not-art.
A lot of people are going to be there showing, watching.
There’s gonna be a huge amount of exhibitionists and voyeurs…
I’ll keep the blog updated with all the relevant stuff.

bon voyage!
