EU commission says NO to roaming charges

The 28 of March 2006 is a day to remember for people who travel and use their mobile devices (like me), and for mobile carriers in europe.
The UE commission has put a ban on roaming surcharges within europe.

Viviane Reding, commissioner for Information Society and Media for the European Union, stated that

“…international roaming charges within Europe are against the principles of free transfer of goods and services within Europe, that European consumers are punished for travelling, and therefore roaming charges will be made illegal.”

beyond fear [Rui Carmo]

Rui’s wiki (I won’t attempt to call it blog) is by far one of the most interesting resources for mac geeks (not regular mac users).
I’m one of them, and I’ve been reading Rui’s posts for more than a year.
I don’t even remember who pointed me to that, maybe Paolo… please someone back me up.

it’s probably one of the feeds containing more flags in my NetNewsWire collection.

as usually, before going to bed, I’m here checking all my feeds (46 in total) in the crave for news.

being this a wiki, it contains a lot of HyperTextual links (the world sort of forgot what the term stands for, or rather ignores it, but that’s another story).

I found this link to “the usual sinus trouble”, and having sinus problems myself, I clicked it.
well…
I ended up reading a very interesting post which was the premise to the whole sinus problems Rui has.
Security in airport is mentioned, and since I travel quite a lot lately, I read it with much interest.

A point to join rui’s discussion is that I could notice some security measures reduction in amsterdam airport (not to talk about moscow).
now the checks are reduced to one, just before the gate, at least for Europe and Russia. No idea about the US.
I think I heard the US makes no exception, and that the US security authority is pretty mad at this (I just report what I was told).

needless to say you’re not allowed to carry a lot of stuff, but nobody ever complained about my metal pen in my backpack.

oh… whatever… it’s just too late and my head ain’t working properly.
too much flying during the past week.

cheers, rui

save time. use a text replacement tool

gina from LifeHacker points us to a nice tool:

textPander

I type a lot.
I’m a programmer/blogger and spend the whole day on a keyboard looking at text.
reason why I wear glasses since one month ago.

well…
this tip will save a lot of time to me and other people.
I plan about starting using it….
NOW

probably gina’s blog won’t be target for many programmers, so here I link the two worlds (hoping my voice will be heard).

working on CSS

Today I upgraded to wordpress 2.02, and while fixing couple things, I realized the first CSS I customized for randomtype b2 was sucking quite a lot.
I wasn’t happy with dimensions (who is anyway), and other sites were causing me text-size envy.

I’m playing with the CSS and the layouts, and I think I’ll do this for a while during the upcoming days, also in moscow, where I suppose I’ll have quite some time to play with my site (and with other stuff too).

Don’t worry if you find a few gremlins on the way.

build an MVC web framework with PHP5 [O'Reilly network]

there’s an interesting series of articles on how to do this.
the article says that you don’t have to necessarily build a framework, but explains you how to do it in case.

I haven’t read through all of it, as I just discovered the link, but the first 2 sections are clear enough.

have a look

If I was doing this blog, I’d be crying after one week

kate, 28.
consumism ad (as I am).

this blog is absolutely fantastic.

Obsessive Consumption wants to know what you buy. Obsessive Consumption wants to know what you owe. Obsessive Consumption conforms to the cliche that shopping is a favorite past time of society. Obsessive Consumption is repulsed and grossly fascinated by the branding of consumer culture. It wants to eat the entire bag of candy and enjoy the sickness that it feels and hour later. It doesn’t want to be an outside critical observer. It wants to be an active participant. Obsessive Consumption wants to be serious. Obsessive Consumption wants to have fun. Obsessive Consumption wants to document and create from experiences through this over stimulating, nauseating world of consumer culture. Obsessive Consumption was created by Kate Bingaman to showcase her love/hate relationship with money, shopping, branding, credit cards, celebrity, advertising and marketing. The work is inspired by the ever ubiquitous, generic, delicate, sometimes stomachache inducing credit card statement, craft as activism, and general consumerism. She created Obsessive Consumption in 2002 when she decided that she was going to not only document all of her purchases, but to also create a brand out of the process to package and promote. obsessiveconsumption.com was launched in early 2003 to bring her documentation to a larger audience. She documented all of her purchases for 28 months. The documentation started on January 22nd, 2002 and ended on April 22nd, 2004. She is currently hand drawing all of her credit card statements until they are paid off and also spends her time consuming, documenting and making. Kate is a 28 year old Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Mississippi State University.
