Latest Nokia E61 update delivers better bluetooth modem functionality on Os X
As followers know, it was tricky to have the E61 to work as a BlueTooth modem.
Even using Ross Barkman‘s 3g scripts, the connectivity had to be achieved tricking the Os X wizard, selecting “dial a specific access number for your internet service provider”.
We were used to select “use a direct, higher speed connection…”.
Well, it looks like update 2.0618.06.05 from 14th of july 2006 fixes this behavior.
I’ve just installed it and it works, fine.
Just remember to backup any sensitive data. I even removed the miniSD card.
You’ll LOOSE EVERYTHING on the phone
p.s.: still no Stun server support for SIP telephony behind NAT (at least I can’t find it).

October 9, 2006yo! i too have a Nokia E61 now and I managed to iSync it with NovaMedia’s plugins. The expense was well worth it. Also I managed to connec to the internet the normal way, only with my old motorola A780 script that I had found at osnews.com and something that I had modified a bit for my network and increased serial port speed. the details are at macandmobile.com under nokia phones : Nokia E61. PING tests and badnwidth tests at pcpitstop.com show the A780 as being slightly faster with lower latencies. Any reason why? can we increase the speeds of the E61 as a tethered modem?

October 9, 2006I have never tried the motorola (not very fond of them).
I personally don’t experience any issue using the E61 as a modem.
do you mean over bluetooth or once connected through USB?

November 2, 2006Hmm. I updated to this version today, and while WLAN finally works well (it used to disconnect all the time), I have the exact opposite experience: I used to have no problems using the E61 as a BT modem with OS X, but now it doesn’t work at all :( From the logs, I see that PAP authentication succeeds, but then after a while it disconnects – probably ipcp negotiations don’t finish.
Any ideas?

November 2, 2006hey, espen.
I started having issues again.
it might be due to some osx config I have done.
why don’t you try setting it as a slow connection?
it might work.

November 2, 2006Thanks for your quick reply! It seems I only lacked the APN in the “Packet data” configuration. Seems to work now (I’m simply using “Nokia Infrared” as the modem script and *99***1# as dial string).

November 3, 2006the dial string is the best trick.
I’m on vodafone and simply use the apn address live.vodafone.com (it should work with you too using your carrier’s apn address).
I’d advice you to use barkman’s scripts for 3g, they work fine. I manage to squeeze up to 60KB/s off my umts connection.
